MANAGEMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL URBAN DEVELOPMENT
    Monitoring of      SO2
Introduction
The present information is about a description of the equipment and procedures used in the permanent monitoring of dioxide of sulfur and meteorological information, developed in the city of Ilo being focused to evaluate the contamination of the air for the presence of SO2, due to its impact in the public health.
The city of Ilo is located in the south coast from Peru to 1250 Km of Lima and 200 Km. to the north of the frontier with Chile.
One of the main environmental problems in the city is the atmospheric contamination.
The continuous monitoring has as purpose to measure the pollutants coming from the industry miner just as the SO2, these obtained data are part of the database of quality of air, the same ones that are using in the elaboration of the study of monitoring of quality of the air in the Zonal Gesta of Air in order to improve the quality of air in Ilo.

Objectives
• To generate a database about the quality of air in urban areas, the one    that will be used as basic information in plans of environmental action, in    order to improve the quality of air and of life in the influence areas.
• To establish a line bases scientific, like instrument of environmental    administration in the quality of air.

• To reach the data obtained to government organisms (CONAM, DIGESA,    APMAS), in order to contribute to the formulation of local standards of    quality of air in urban and rural areas.

• To implement a contingency plan to prevent the negative impacts in the    population of Ilo.

• To evaluate the efficiency prospectively of the measures of the    metallurgist-energy sector, in the control of the atmospheric emissions.

• To contribute scientific information for epidemic studies, biomonitoring    investigation, environmental and other audits, with relationship to the    SO2 and PTS.

• To reach the data to the government and such involved institutions as:    Ministry of Health, General Address of Environmental Health, Ministry of    Energy and Mines among other that which has been good to regulate    the standards of quality of air in our country, such it is so starting from    June of the 2001 they exist Standard of Quality of Air for the Peru,    approved with D.S. 074 –2001 –PCM.

The Permanent Monitoring of Quality of Air
The Permanent Monitoring of Quality of Air has five automatic analyzers of SO2, that carry out a continuous monitoring and they are distributed strategically in the whole city of Ilo, it covers the rural and urban area.
In this study we use 5 automatic analyzers of SO2 Thermo Environmental Instruments Model 43W of ultraviolet absorption that measure the concentration of SO2 continually in the atmosphere. The analyzing suck the air of the atmosphere through a funnel and a teflón hose, which are located to the atmosphere, to not less than 3 meters on the level of the floor. The air enters to the camera of mensuration of the automatic monitor of SO2 and it emits a sign in Volts, to a system of acquisition of data. The system of acquisition of data is installed in a computer. The card of data, transforms the voltage into real values of concentration of SO2 in microgrames for cubic meter (µg/m3) and then the computer records the data in the hard disk.

(All the values are concentrations in micrograms for cubic meter, NE means not to exceed)

Simultaneously the data are recorded in the DATALOGGER and correspondents to the central office through the modem. This way of transmission of the information, allows us a control easy of the operation of the equip, equipments, and it also allows us to implement a system of protection environmental denominated Plan of Contingency. These monitors receive maintenance and calibration every 15 days, for those that are used standard of calibration to two concentrations: 0 and 5 PPM SO2. Also it is carried out a calibration multipoint monthly what will give the dependability of the linely of the equipments, according to protocols of the EPA (EPA, 1994), what will allow us a calibration of more precision.
